Here’s How Mumbai Indians Can Still Qualify For IPL 2022 Playoffs After Losing First 5 Matches

Former five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have gotten off to a horrendous start in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. The Rohit Sharma-led outfit is at the bottom of the points table with no points to their name after five matches.

The Mumbai Indians started their IPL 2022 season with a defeat against the Delhi Capitals. After that, they lost their matches against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings.

MI have made many changes to their playing XI, but nothing has worked for them. Speaking at the post-match presentation after the defeat to the Punjab Kings, captain Rohit Sharma said:

“We have not been playing good cricket for a while and that is why we have been on the losing side. The Kings batted pretty well and they got off to a flier. I thought 190+ was chaseable on that pitch because it was really good to bat on. We got to go back and come back collectively as a group.”

Can Mumbai Indians still qualify for IPL 2022 playoffs?

The IPL 2022 playoffs are still a long time away, but five-time champions Mumbai Indians will find it challenging to make it to the next stage. They have done in the past. In 2014, they lost their first five matches and still finished in the Top 4.

But this is a 10-team tournament. The last time IPL featured 10 franchises, the team that finished fourth had 16 points to their name. So the Mumbai Indians need to win seven or eight of their remaining nine league games to make it to the next round.

If they emerge victorious in eight, it should be enough to qualify, while if they win seven, they will have to hope that the other results go their way. Also, the net run rate factor will come into the play then.
