Shikhar Dhawan has expressed his desire to play for the Indian cricket team in the 2022 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. Dhawan’s career has had many ups and downs. In the year 2021, Dhawan made his T20I captaincy debut for India, and just a few months after that, he did not receive a place in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup.
The Indian team preferred the duo of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as their opening pair. They picked rising star Ishan Kishan as the third opener. After the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the Indian team continued with the same trio. They also added Ruturaj Gaikwad to the squad.
Since Dhawan is a specialist opener as well, a few members of the cricket universe feel that the left-handed batter has slim chances of playing T20I cricket for the Indian team again.
However, fans should note that Dhawan has consistently performed well in the IPL. In a recent interview with Times of India, Dhawan opined that if he has a good IPL season with the Punjab Kings, he could return to the Indian squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
“T20 World Cup is coming. If do well in the IPL, I can get into the side. I am a very process-driven person. I don’t set goals. If I am enjoying my game, I mean from a fitness, game, and mindset perspective, If I am enjoying on all these fronts, it works best for me,” said Dhawan.
Shikhar Dhawan has been a top performer in ICC events
Shikhar Dhawan has represented the Indian cricket team in multiple ICC events. The left-handed batter won the Golden Bat when India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
It will be interesting to see if he can make a comeback to the team for the T20 World Cup. India will play a lot of T20Is before the mega event, so the selectors can give Dhawan one more chance.
