The IPL board has finally announced the format for IPL 2022. With two new teams entering the fray, IPL henceforth will be a ten-team affair. Hence, it was expected that there would be a slight change in this format. All teams have been divided into two virtual groups and CSK and Mumbai Indians find themselves in different groups. In this article, we explain to you the reason why CSK and Mumbai Indians will play in two different groups in IPL 2022.

A change in format for IPL 2022

As per the new format, the ten teams have been divided into two groups. Each team will play twice against teams from the same group and once against four teams from the other group. There will be an additional game against the franchise from the other group in the same row. Hence, each squad will have 14 league games. All the league matches will happen in four stadiums across Mumbai and Pune. The venue for the playoffs will be decided later. Here is the announcement by IPL for more details:

CSK and Mumbai Indians will play in two different groups

The game between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians is a marquee clash in IPL. Usually, the first game of the season tends to take place between the sides. In the upcoming season, both these franchises will feature in different groups. However, considering they are in the same row, CSK and MI will stake take on each other twice in the league phase.

The teams have been allotted in two virtual groups based on the number of IPL championships won and by the number of final matches played by them. CSK and MI are two of the most successful franchises in the competition. Hence, MI was put in Group A and CSK was assigned in Group B. Therefore both teams will play in different groups.
