5 Popular batsmen to take multiple 5-wicket hauls in ODIs

Cricket has over the years been blessed with great batsmen and bowlers. Any player who can bowl as well as bat becomes a big asset for the team. Taking a 5-wicket haul is a great achievement for any bowler, and a bigger one if the main batsman manages to get one. So in today’s piece, we have 5 phenomenal batsmen who were also great in the bowling department and repeated this feat more than once. Let’s take a look at 5 popular batsmen to take multiple 5-wicket hauls in One Day Internationals.

#1. Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya is one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He was especially lethal in ODIs, scoring 13,430 runs in One Day Internationals. However, he was also a great bowler. Jayasuriya took four 5-wicket hauls in ODIs. His best figures came against England in 1993. He took 6/29 in that match, recording his best ODI bowling figures.

The other three 5-wicket hauls were taken against Pakistan (2004), West Indies (1997) and Australia (1999). His bowling figures against those team read 5/17, 5/58 and 5/28 respectively. Jayasuriya has since retired after a fulfilling career.

#2. Greg Chappell

Greg Chappell is a former Australian captain and all-rounder. He is one of the most polarizing in Australian cricket. Chappell was not only an exceptional batsman but was also a very competent bowler. He bowled right-arm medium pace and was pretty good at it. He took two 5-wicket hauls in his ODI career.

The first five-for was against India in 1981 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He registered figures of 5/15 in the match. The second 5-wicket haul came against England at Edgbaston in 1977. His figures read 5/20 in the match.

#3. Sir Viv Richards

Sir Viv Richards is one of the greatest batsmen of all time. His name is forever etched in the annals of cricket alongside names like Sachin Tendulkar and Sir Don Bradman. However, in addition to being a legendary batsman, he was also a great bowler. Richards was a right-arm slow bowler and managed to take two 5-wicket hauls.

His two 5-wicket hauls were against India (in 1989) and against New Zealand (in 1987). Richards recorded his best ODI bowling figures against India, managing to scalp 6 wickets for 41 runs.

#4. Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is one of the greatest players India has ever produced. Popularly called ‘Dada’, Ganguly is also one of the most successful Indian captains of all time. He was also called the ‘God of the Off Side’ due to his ability to play the off-side like no one else. Ganguly was an all-rounder and a regular in the team’s bowling lineup. Thus his inclusion in this list already had a big possibility.

Ganguly got two 5-wicket hauls in his fabulous ODI career. These two were against Zimbabwe and arch-rivals Pakistan in 2000 and 1997 respectively. His best figures were against Pakistan, where he scalped 5 wickets for just 16 runs.

#5. Sachin Tendulkar

Would it even be a list of great cricketers if Sachin Tendulkar wasn’t a part of it? Sachin is arguably the greatest cricketer of all time. His records and performances are strong proof of his legendary legacy. But many people forget that though he was a great batsman, Tendulkar was also a phenomenal spinner.

So it comes as no surprise that he registered to get more than a single 5-wicket haul. Tendulkar took 5 wickets more than once. He did so first against Australia in 1998, and against Pakistan in 2005.
