1) Wanindu Hasaranga
Wanindu Hasaranga is one of the best spinners in the game right now, especially in the T20 format. It has been a while since Mumbai Indians have had a good spin-bowling unit. Hence, Mahela could target Hasaranga to add that element to the side.
Hasaranga is known to be a wicket-taker and at the Wankehede, this could be sufficient. Plus, he also adds value as a batter, which can further help the balance of the side.
2) Kamindu Mendis
Kamindu Mendis is one of the Sri Lankan cricketers Mahela Jayawardene might target for Mumbai Indians. MI is known to be a franchise that invests in cricketers in advance. They did that with Dewald Brevis and they could find a similar project for the next cycle, as well.
So far, in T20s, Kamindu Mendis has not shown a lot of his skills. However, in Tests, he has proved that he has the mettle to become a superstar. Plus, he is also an ambidextrous spinner. This will further add variety to the spin attack whenever he plays.
3) Maheesh Theekshana
At Wankhede, you might need spinners who can do something off the pitch. Basically, a defensive spinner, if used well, can provide a lot of benefits to the side. In this regard, Theekshana will be a great addition to the squad.
Theekshana did not have the best of campaigns in IPL 2024. Nevertheless, in tournaments such as the CPL, he showed good form. With someone like Mahela available to guide him, Maheesh can find success. Hence, he is on this list.
