The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is happening in India right now, and it has been a forgettable season for the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Despite having some big names in their squad, CSK has failed to perform well. They will finish in the bottom half of the points table. Since they have no chance of qualifying for the playoffs, CSK is now looking forward to IPL 2023.
They have tried out some new players in their recent matches. Since MS Dhoni is unlikely to play many more seasons, CSK will be keen to groom someone as a captain under Dhoni’s watch in IPL 2023.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Chahar seem the current options available after Ravindra Jadeja’s disappointing season, but outside the squad, CSK could target the following three former IPL skippers as captaincy options for 2023.
1. CSK could go for Kane Williamson if SRH releases him ahead of IPL 2023
Kane Williamson had one of the worst seasons of his IPL career in 2022. SRH retained him ahead of IPL 2022, but the Kiwi batter failed to get going. Because of his 14-crore price tag, SRH might think of releasing him. If they do so, CSK should try to sign him as he has a ton of leadership experience, having led New Zealand and SRH.
2. CSK could try Steve Smith as a captain in IPL 2023
Steve Smith and MS Dhoni have played together in the past. Smith surprisingly went unsold at the mega auction. He is not a bad T20 player, and because of his good record as IPL captain in the past, CSK could try to bring him in.
3. Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan proved himself as a top-quality leader by taking England to 2019 Cricket World Cup glory and Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL 2021 Final. Morgan seems a wildcard candidate to lead the Super Kings.
