A few hours before the first game of the season, the Chennai Super Kings captaincy was handed over to Ravindra Jadeja. However, both for the team and individually for Jaddu, the decision did not go well. Now, midway through the campaign, Jadeja has given back the captaincy to MS Dhoni. Now, MSD taking over the reins again means that there are plenty of interesting elements in store for the franchise. In this article, we take a look at three possible effects of MS Dhoni getting back CSK captaincy.
1) MS Dhoni could play IPL 2023
MS Dhoni is one person who always takes decisions in the interest of the team. If he has decided to captain CSK again, he will surely have a plan for the upcoming season. Again giving the captaincy to someone new for IPL 2023 might put CSK in trouble.
Therefore, only if he is willing to play IPL 2023, MSD could have decided to become the captain again. MSD had previously expressed his desire to finish his career at the Chepauk. This could also happen if Dhoni plays next year.
2) Ravindra Jadeja might never captain CSK again
Jadeja not captaining the franchise again might be one of the effects of MS Dhoni getting back CSK captaincy. The player is 33-years-old and having failed in his first attempt as the skipper, it is possible that he might not take up the role again.
In domestic cricket, as well, Jadeja never had a lot of captaincy experience. Most importantly, the responsibility was affecting his individual performance. For the franchise, as well, giving the task to someone who has quit from the same position before might not bode well. Hence, the Saurashtra all-rounder may not be the skipper of CSK again.
3) CSK could have a foreign captain for the first time in the near future
CSK is the only existing franchise from IPL 2008 that is yet to have a foreign captain. However, they might have to appoint one after MS Dhoni leaves the position vacant.
Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu are old to take up the role while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Chahar are inexperienced. If Jaddu is not becoming the skipper again, CSK might have to look at some new options. With most Indians eligible for the role in other franchises, CSK could have no option but to go for a foreign candidate.
