It has been confirmed that Jonny Bairstow will miss IPL 2023. Before the 2022 T20 World Cup, he suffered a freak injury. He was all set to return for IPL but now, his comeback has been delayed. It will be a big blow for Punjab Kings, who actually relied on him for both the wicket-keeping and power-hitting duties. On that note, here, we take a look at three players who can replace Jonny Bairstow in Punjab Kings for IPL 2023.
1) Kusal Mendis
Kusal Mendis would be a good like-to-like replacement for Bairstow. Yes, Jitesh Sharma is available as an option behind the stumps but Mendis would also be a good option.
Shikhar Dhawan is known to take it slow at the start of an inning. With Mendis’ inclusion, if not for Bairstow’s impact, at least there would be a good choice at the top of the order for PBKS when it comes to big-hitting.
2) Tom Kohler-Cadmore
Tom Kohler-Cadmore is one of the players who can replace Jonny Bairstow in Punjab Kings for IPL 2023. The English cricketer was in good form in the recently concluded PSL. Therefore, he would be one of the options for the franchise.
He is a big-hitter and would suit the philosophy of the franchise. However, in his presence, PBKS will have to re-arrange their batting order and could have a youngster open the batting along with Shikhar.
3) Jason Roy
Jason Roy is a man in form and as per reports, PBKS has approached him already. Yes, this move could backfire but currently, this is one of the best available options in the market.
In recent years, Roy’s game against spin has improved. This will help the franchise do well in this aspect. Shikhar can also take his time at the top of the order as Roy would more or less be a like-to-like replacement for Bairstow.
