3 Australian players who could have played in 2023 ODI World Cup if they had done well in IPL 2023

The Australian cricketers dominate when it comes to the foreign contingent in IPL. In the past, we have seen the likes of Shane Watson nail a place in the national place after doing well in the IPL. A few cricketers could have strengthened their spot in the Australian Team had they been better in IPL 2023. Here, we take a look at three Australian players who could have played in the 2023 ODI World Cup if they had done well in IPL 2023.

1) Matthew Short

With Travis Head injured, it would have been a great opportunity for Matthew Short to get a place in the side. Ashton Agar was also injured and an extra spin-bowling all-rounder would have made sense for Australia.

However, while Short was good with the ball against India, with the bat, he was not great. In IPL 2023, as well, despite getting sufficient chances at Punjab Kings, he could not deliver with the bat. If he had done well then, he would have surely been looked at more seriously.

2) Nathan Ellis

Many felt that Nathan Ellis would be the fourth pacer in the side. However, Sean Abbott got the final nod. Much of it has to do with Ellis’ recent shows.

In IPL 2023, he was actually decent but just could not be consistent. If he had done better, may be, he could have had a good chance of playing in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

3) Jason Behrendorff

Jason Behrendorff is one of the Australian players who could have played in the 2023 ODI World Cup if they had done well in IPL 2023. He took 14 wickets but his economy was on the higher side.

Australia might have needed an extra new-ball specialist because of the injury issues to their main trio. If Jason would have had a more penetrative performance in IPL 2023, the management might have looked at him.
