The Indian Premier League is considered the premier T20 tournament among the franchise level events in cricket. No other country’s league comes close to the IPL in that aspect. The fans have got to witness some dream combos like Sachin Tendulkar-Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly-Shoaib Akhtar, MS Dhoni-Steve Smith in the same team because of the IPL’s unique format.
BCCI does not allow the Indian cricketers to compete elsewhere. Although the restrictions have eased of late, an Indian cricketer cannot compete in both the IPL and a foreign tournament. The batsmen are generally presumed to have the upper hand in the T20 arena.
Unlike Tests and ODIs, the batsmen usually do not take much time to settle down and play the big shots in T20 cricket. However, a few bowlers have been quite successful in this league. The franchises backed these players for a long time and this duration was enough for them to scalp 100 wickets for them.
Here is a team-wise list of bowlers who picked up 100 wickets or more for just a single IPL franchise in their careers.
Mumbai Indians – Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah
The Mumbai Indians have been the most successful franchise in the IPL history, and the primary reason behind it has been their phenomenal performances of their bowlers. MI not only holds the record for the most title wins in IPL history, but they are also the only side with multiple bowlers to have scalped 100+ wickets in the IPL.
Lasith Malinga has played for the Mumbai Indians only in his entire IPL career and scalped 170 wickets in 122 IPL games. He has also won the Purple Cap award in his career.
Harbhajan Singh has been the second most successful bowler in the blue jersey of IPL. He has shifted to the Chennai Super Kings now, but Harbhajan played 137 games for MI, picking up 126 wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah recently became the third MI bowler to take 100 wickets for the franchise. His first and 100th IPL wicket was the world’s best batsman, Virat Kohli. Bumrah has scalped 102 wickets in 89 IPL matches of his career.
Chennai Super Kings – Dwayne Bravo
Many great bowlers have represented the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL history. However, only one man has managed to take 100 wickets for the 3-time IPL winners.
Former IPL Purple Cap winner Dwayne Bravo started his career with MI, but he bloomed at CSK. In 95 matches, he has taken 110 wickets for the Yellow Army.
Delhi Capitals – Amit Mishra
Despite being a part of the IPL since the 2008 season, the Delhi Capitals have never made it to the finals of any tournament. They have changed their players quite frequently.
However, Amit Mishra has played for them in a majority of the seasons. Mishra has represented DC in 95 matches, picking up 100 wickets.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Sunil Narine
Another Caribbean all-rounder to feature on this elite list is the Kolkata Knight Riders’ star Sunil Narine. The mystery spinner has been an essential part of KKR in the IPL.
Narine has played 118 IPL matches for the 2-time champions. He has dismissed 127 batsmen in his IPL career, with his best bowling figures being 5/19.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – Yuzvendra Chahal
Apart from Amit Mishra and Harbhajan Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal has also achieved the feat of taking 100 wickets for a single IPL team among the Indian spinners. Chahal played for MI first and moved to RCB in 2014.
That switch changed his career as he has taken 119 wickets in 95 games for Bangalore. He is a top contender for the Purple Cap every year.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Although the Sunrisers Hyderabad joined the IPL only in 2013, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been able to take 100+ wickets for the team. Kumar is a former 2-time IPL winner, but he could not play this year because of an injury.
Bhuvi has picked up 112 wickets in 90 matches donning the Orange jersey.
