2 players who could surprisingly open the batting in 2023 ODI World Cup

Opening the batting will be a crucial element in an ODI game, especially in the current era. These days, batters look to take the maximum toll during the powerplay. Unlike the older era, there is no wait-and-watch strategy now, thanks to the rise of T20 cricket. In this background, a few teams could opt for a fresh opening combination. Some of these players might be suited the best to deliver in the powerplay. Here, we take a look at two players who could surprisingly open the batting in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

1) Joe Root

Joe Root has not played a single ODI in 2023 but has still earned a spot in the England squad for the 2023 ODI WC. This is purely down to Root’s credentials as a batter and his recent success in India. Also, his ability to offer a few overs of spin might have also played a part.

That said, it will be interesting to see what spot Root might play. While the No.3 role looks suitable for him, it may not be a surprise if he also gets to open the batting. He is a traditional run-scorer and powerplay might be a good phase to take the best out of the player. Also, having Dawid Malan at No.3 might give a better balance to the playing XI.

2) Travis Head

Travis Head is one of the players who could surprisingly open the batting in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Between 2018 and 2022, Travis Head hardly opened the batting in his ODI career. However, since 2022, he has been doing it consistently.

With Aaron Finch having retired, Australia needs a partner at the top for Warner. Travis Head looks to have cemented this spot. In the limited chances that he has got, he has been good and his approach to the game might be needed in the powerplay for the Aussies. Hence, Head is a part of this list.
