2 Indian cricketers receive the “Wisden Cricketers of the Year” award in the same year for the first time

Wisden recently announced the publication’s cricketer of the year award. For the first time ever, two Indians won the award in the same year. In this article, we take a look as two Indian cricketers receive the “Wisden Cricketers of the Year” award for 2021.

Indian cricketers receive the “Wisden Cricketers of the Year” award for 2021

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah are the two players who have won the award this year along with Joe Root, Devon Conway, and Dane van Niekerk. While Joe Root was named Leading Cricketer in the World, South Africaโ€™s Lizelle Lee was given the title of Leading Woman Cricketer in the World.

Joe Root was the highest run-getter in Tests last year. The former England skipper scored 1708 runs in 15 matches in 2021. At No.2, it is Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who scored 906 runs in 11 games. Rohit helped India defeat England at home at the start of the year and then was the team’s highest run-getter against the same opposition in England.

On the other hand, Bumrah was one of the best bowlers in 2021. In 9 games, the pacer took 30 wickets at an average of 26.53 in Tests. Although there were many other bowlers who took more scalps than him, in terms of impact, the Gujarat cricketer was in top form. He delivered match-winning spells in England and also had a terrific show with the bat at the Lord’s in 2021. Hence, he is also featured on this list.

The duo must continue their form

Since Virat Kohli in 2019, no other Indian had won this award. Hence, it is terrific that two of them have won it for 2021. That said, the duo must do well again this year. While the T20 World Cup in 2022 is a top assignment, India will also play Tests against England and Australia this year. For all these games, Rohit and Bumrah have to be in good touch for the team to do well.
