Virat Kohli might not have had great form in the last three years but when it comes to ICC World Cups, the King never fails to impress us with his consistent performances. In the T20 World Cup 2022, Kohli was not only India’s best performer, but he also ended up being the highest runscorer of the tournament.

Kohli’s averages in the 204, 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cup prove this statement perfectly:

Avg of Kohli in 2014 T20 WC: 106.3

Avg of Kohli in 2016 T20 WC: 136.5

Avg of Kohli in 2022 T20 WC: 98.6

Yes, it might be true that his performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup was not that great but then again the entire Indian team failed to perform well in that tournament. Moreover, despite having bad form, Kohli was arguably the best Indian batsman in the T20 World Cup 2021.

It is a shame that he could not save Team India in the semi-final against England despite being in top form. This tells us a lot about how poorly the rest of the Indian players performed in this tournament.

Big players like KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and even Rishabh Pant did not play up to the mark in the T20 World Cup 2022 and thus all the responsibility fell on the shoulders of Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. Cricket is a team game after all and they just could not win all the matches single-handedly.

It is high time that BCCI starts focusing on International matches now. The increasing popularity of the Indian Premier League has led to our players focusing a lot less on International matches. IPL offers a lot more money and thus the cricketers are becoming franchise-minded. This is ultimately hampering India’s performance in International tournaments and BCCI needs to take some serious steps to solve this big problem.
