Sri Lankan cricket has been dealt a blow recently with the retirements of Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Both players did have a role in the squad’s immediate future, at least. Hence, in order to ensure that such decisions by players will not have a major impact on the team, the board has come up with a plan. SLC’s new corporate style rule has come into the picture which places a few stipulations on players wanting to retire from international cricket.

SLC’s new corporate style rule

As per the decision by Sri Lanka Cricket, the new rules are as follows:

1. National players who intend to retire from national cricket should provide three months’ notice to Sri Lanka cricket of their intention to retire.
2. Retired national players who wish to obtain ‘No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to play in overseas franchise leagues will only be issued to such players who have completed six months of their effective date of retirement.
3. Retired national players will be considered eligible for local leagues such as the LPL, only if they have played 80% of matches in the domestic cricket competitions conducted in the season prior to the conducting of the league.

Fitness requirements making the players consider their future

One of the major reasons for players to consider their future is the latest fitness requirements. Bhanuka Rajapaksa stated that this is one of the reasons for him to quit Sri Lankan cricket. The other reason, of course, is the lucrative T20 leagues. Since the global T20 leagues offer more financial security, players are inclining towards it. Overall, this is affecting the quality of Sri Lankan cricket. In a bid to address it, SLC has come out with the new rules. The players would now think twice before announcing their retirement. The rules by SLC will be a part of the next batch of central contracts
