England thumps Australia by 3 wickets in Leeds
In what was another nail-bitter, England defeated Australia by 3 wickets at Leeds to mark their first victory of the Ashes 2023. The hosts opted to field and on account of a five-wicket haul by Mark Wood bundled out the opposition for 263 runs. Most of the Aussie batters struggled but Mitchell Marsh struck a staggering century to take his team to a comfortable position.
In reply England could manage only 237 runs as Australia’s bowlers were all over them but skipper Ben Stokes put on a great show and struck a magnificent 80 runs to take his team close to Australia’s total of 263 runs. The English bowlers then came out all guns blazing and bowled staggeringly well.
They rattled Australia for 224 runs, setting themselves a target of 251 runs to chase. England batted well in their chase but lost wickets at regular intervals. But young Harry Brook kept them in the game as he played a brilliant innings and smashed 75 runs under pressure to take his team close to the target.
But he too lost his wicket at the crucial juncture. When he went back, England needed 21 runs to win. Chris Woakes played a vital hand of 32 runs and scored before Mark Wood (16*)struck some lusty blows to win the game for their side by 3 wickets.
