CSK buys Ben Stokes for INR 16.25 Cr
Not many teams expected CSK to go for Ben Stokes at the auctions. Teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad were expected to look at Stokes as the captaincy candidate. However, it was CSK that planned for the player and after an intense bidding war, they hired the cricketer.
It will be interesting to see how Stokes will be used by the franchise. The most likely candidate to miss out on the XI will be Devon Conway. With Ben Stokes preferred at the top order in T20s, MS Dhoni and co. will get the best use out of the player by having him either open the innings or bat at No.3. Moeen Ali cannot be dropped and hence, we could witness Ben Stokes opening the batting along with Ruturaj Gaikwad. It will be an explosive batting combination and if Stokes can find his way to tackle spin well, it could as well turn out to be a big coup by the franchise. In the bowling department, CSK will have Ben Stokes assist Deepak Chahar and Mukesh Choudhary. Most importantly, after the retirement of MS Dhoni, Stokes is likely to become the next skipper of the franchise. This is likely to be the most important decision behind CSK hiring the cricketer.
