“Want to win two or three World Cups for India and create history,” says KL Rahul

KL Rahul scored an 18-ball half century against Scotland yesterday

Recalling the memories of India’s triumph in the 2011 ODI World Cup final, KL Rahul said it was a turning point in his cricketing career as from that point onwards, he also started dreaming about winning a World Cup for India and not just one, but two or three World Cups if he can.

KL Rahul has been a part of two World Cups so far. Apart from the T20 World Cup 2021 in which he is playing right now, another one was the ODI World Cup 2019 where he opened the batting for India in quite a few games including the semi-final, after Shikhar Dhawan got injured.

At this stage, KL is now India’s premier batsman not just in T20 cricket, but in white-ball cricket altogether and he is actually one of the contenders to take over India’s T20 captaincy as well. There is hardly any doubt about the fact that he will be representing India in the next three or four white-ball World Cups.

But, before he starts thinking about the future World Cups, KL will wish India gets to the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup, and he gets to fulfil his dream in the UAE itself.

While India’s chances are slim, there is still a little ray of hope that Afghanistan wins their next game against the Blackcaps and India gets ahead of both of them on the basis of NRR with a victory against Namibia.

“Growing up, I watched the 2011 World Cup at home, that’s when we won the World Cup and things changed for me. From that day on, I was like, this is what I want to do. I want to win a World Cup for my country,” KL said while talking to ICC’s social media channels.

KL played a key role last night in stretching India’s NRR ahead of their two competitors in the group with an 18-ball fifty against Scotland. With Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s brisk partnership at the top of the order, India hunted down the target of 86 in less than 7 overs and are now seated at no. 2 in the group 2 points table.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
