BCCI announced the squad for the Sri Lanka Test and T20I series on Saturday. The major talking point was the dropping of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha from the Test squad. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has been rested for the T20I series and will return for the Tests. In this article, we take a look at the new batting position for Virat Kohli in Test cricket that has been suggested by Sunil Gavaskar.
Sunil Gavaskar suggests a new batting position for Virat Kohli
Cheteshwar Pujara occupied the No.3 position for a very long team in the Indian Test Team. He did exceedingly well in that slot. In Tests, No.3 is important, especially when an early wicket falls down. Blunting the new ball is one of the main tasks of this batsman.
Now that Pujara has made way, it will be interesting to see who will fill up the role. The likes of Hanuma Vihari and Shubman Gill are the frontrunners for the position. However, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons Virat Kohli must bat at No.3. Considering the inexperience of the middle-order, it might be a decent option to request Virat Kohli to take up the No.3 role. That said, he himself is going through a tough patch. Hence, it needs to be seen if there would be a change in his batting position.
Now that Pujara has been dropped and the No.3 spot is vacant, Sunil Gavaskar suggests Virat Kohli should take up that one-down position. #Virat #Pujara #Rahane

An important series for the former India skipper
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli will miss the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. He will return to play his 100th Test at Mohali on March 4th. After this encounter, India’s next Test will be a day-night affair at Bengaluru.
Virat Kohli is going through a rough patch in all formats of the game. He is no longer the skipper of the unit. Considering that the other prominent members of the batting order aren’t there, Virat will be under pressure to deliver. For Team India, as well, Virat must do well to win the game.
