After a glittering career of 21 long years, Spanish and Real Madrid legend, Iker Casillas bade adieu to football forever. He finally pulled the plug on his glamorous career at 39 years of age. Being the hero to a zillion remarkable saves, and the torch-bearer of excellence, Casillas burst onto the international scene after fortune dealt a meaty hand.
Despite rusty signs of brilliance, he was not ready to hammer the Spanish side to glory right after his introduction. However, with aid from Puyol and Ramos, he built ample panache in him and started growing in stature. Madrid brought him on to the scene of elites in 1999 and he was an instant hit with a few humdinger saves. His culmination of national glory came in 2010, when he denied Arjen Robben a thrilling finish in the final to keep Spain afloat until the end, where Iniesta smashed the telling blow.
After Real Madrid, Casillas headed over to Porto and was leading the defences of the Spanish side unless a tragedy took away football from him in 2019. He suffered an acute myocardial infarction during training on May 1st, 2019, that unofficially knelled the end of his career. However, it was today that he finally came out to the public in an official declaration that he his hanging his boots once and forever.
Iker himself tweeted, βThe important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination to which it takes you. I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the path and the dream destination.”
Twitter hailed their hero in pompous fashion as we will look at the best possible tweets those are doing the rounds to say one final goodbye to the legend.
