In another thrilling encounter on the last day of the league stage in the ongoing IPL, the fans were stunned after MI posted a rambunctious showdown with the bat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. After Kolkata Knight Riders rocked and rolled in the preceding encounter against Rajasthan Royals, things became excessively challenging for the reigning champions.
The equation was simple. They had to bat first and win the match with at least a sumptuous margin of 170 runs. Coming out to bat, Mumbai Indians was relentless and they were in hot pursuit of the astronomical total that could have at least given them a scope to stage a fight.
The story of the game
With 235 on the cards, all that was needed to eliminate Mumbai Indians was 66 runs on the card from SRH. It didnโt take long for the Orange Army to respond strongly as their two openers were off to a flying start.
Jason Roy and Abhishek Sharma were relentless in the opening stand and meant business as they went hard in the powerplay. The young Sharma was absolutely phenomenal as he hammered four fours and one six while Roy pumped six fours.
Jason Roy and Abhishek Sharma were enough to knock MI out
Just at the edge of elimination Trent Boult rocked Jason Roy but it was too late. A few minutes from that delivery and the reigning champions were out as Kolkata Knight Riders sailed to the playoffs to fix an eliminator clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Ishan Kishan was absolutely top-notch as he belted out a smoking 84 from just 32 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav whipped another cracking knock with a 40-ball-82. Jason Holder was hammered for 52 runs but he also stood out amongst the bowlers with four crucial wickets.
Twitter reacted in a mixed way as they were stunned to see the defending champions crashing out of the tournament.
