The New Lucknow IPL franchise has announced the name of the team a few weeks ahead of the mega auction and it has been named Lucknow Super Giants, which is quite similar to the name of the previous IPL team that RPSG group owned. RPSG were the owners of the Pune-based IPL franchise for two years, and they had named it Rising Pune Supergiant as well.
Lucknow franchise had actually run a fan poll on their website to give the fans an opportunity to name the franchise and the owner Sanjeev Goenka, while talking to the Indian journalist Boria Majumdar, said that most of the responses that they got suggested that the fans wanted the team to be named Lucknow Super Giants.
Boria was in conversation with Goenka as well as Gautam Gambhir and KL Rahul who are the mentor and the captain of the franchise respectively and Gautam said that he is really excited to be working for a man like Goenka.
KL Rahul also revealed that he had a couple of conversations with Goenka before signing the deal with Lucknow and the way he spoke and the kind of understanding he has about the players, it was very clear to him that this is the franchise he wants to play for, as it also gives him the opportunity to build a team from the scratch.
The fans, however, are not very happy about the fact that the franchise decided to adopt the same name that RPSG group had previously with Pune and didn’t try to improvise at all.
A lot of fans said that they didn’t want this name, and it seems the franchise, even before the poll, had already decided that they would name the franchise Lucknow Super Giants, rather than anything else.
Lucknow Super Giants have already built a decent fanbase
Lucknow Super Giants already seem to have built a decent fanbase because it is the first IPL franchise from Uttar Pradesh, which is the most populated state in the country. The fact that the franchise has added names like KL Rahul and Gautam Gambhir to its ranks has enhanced the fanbase as well.
However, now the franchise has its task cut out to give the fans something to cheer about next season and while winning the title is never a guarantee for any franchise in the IPL, Lucknow would want to qualify for the playoffs with consistent performances.
Here are the Twitter reactions after the RPSG group announced the name of the Lucknow franchise today –
