Shami’s iconic half-century: Who would have thought that after the departure of Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant, India could have been defending a total of 258 if the declaration arrives now? It was not even there in the picture.
However, miracles do happen and Shami and Bumrah penned an incredible record of claiming the ace position in the list of the highest partnerships by Indians for the 9th wicket in Test cricket.
The duo added 77 runs with Shami pumping a historic half-century at the Mecca of cricket while Bumrah took the fight to the fast bowlers by rattling them mentally and physically.
Shami exhibited some exemplary strokes that raced to the ropes and brought up his half-century in sumptuous fashion with a colossal strike to the stands.
Shami started the knock on a cautious approach, but shortly after, he was seen letting go of the manacles and hammering a few classic strokes left and right.
Not really playing baseless shots, he ensured that he blended aggression and defence in the perfect proportions that could give India a chance to win and if not a victory, at least secure a draw.
Things seemed very bleak after India lost the prized scalp of Rishabh Pant earlier in the day. A somewhat minimal resistance from Ishant Sharma fizzled away too, only to introduce Shami and Bumrah to the crease.
Shami had earlier proven himself to be a handy craftsman with the bat, as he can swing it and swing it hard enough to dispatch the balls to the stands.
Today was one such day and as England allowed a bit of reprieve, India fired home with all guns blazing. He conjured a monumental strike against Moeen Ali to notch up his half-century and help India to be stationed in the driverโs seat after the end of the first session of the final day.
Twitter couldnโt help but applaud the historic effort from Shami and there was a boatload of tweets to congratulate Indiaโs new destructor-in-chief.
