Jonny Bairstow made history in Nottingham as he set a new record for the fastest century by a player in the fourth innings of a Test match. The right-handed batter smashed a hundred off just 77 deliveries while chasing 299 runs in the Nottingham Test. New Zealand cricket team set a target of 299 runs after losing all their wickets for 284 runs in the second innings.
The Blackcaps batted first in the match and scored 553 runs in the first innings. Many fans opined that the England cricket team captain Ben Stokes made an error by winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. In reply, the England cricket team scored 539 runs in the first innings and conceded a lead of only 14 runs.
Batting in the second innings, New Zealand scored 284 thanks to fifties from Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young. Speaking ahead of the final day of the Test, New Zealand cricket team’s fast bowler Trent Boult admitted that the Blackcaps know England’s Test coach Brendon McCullum and how he would plan an aggressive strategy for Day 5. Here’s what he said:
“I know their coach relatively well and I don’t think he’ll be shutting up shop. It’s exciting to come here in the morning with all of those results on the table and the boys are very excited for it. There was some hard work done throughout the last couple of days and I think the game is quite nicely poised.”
Fans on Twitter react as Jonny Bairstow scores the fastest hundred by an Englishman in more than 100 years
The fastest hundred by an Englishman in Test cricket is by GL Jessop, who scored it in 76 balls back in 1902, and now Jonny Bairstow slammed a 100 off 77 balls. Currently, he is on 127 runs off 88 deliveries, hitting 12 fours and seven sixes. Here’s how cricket fans on Twitter lauded his performance:

A century off 77 balls is England's second quickest ever Test hundred.
England need 80 more to beat New Zealand on the final day.
