Despite a heartrending outcome for the visiting South Africans, an incoming Tristan Stubbs stunned the world an imperial showdown, that left the audience on their feet, despite being compelled to return empty-handed at the end of it all.
Batting first England amassed a staggering 234 from their quota of 20 overs. Jonny Bairstow continued with his dream run as he bashed a 53-ball-90 while Moeen Ali delivered a swashbuckling 18-ball-52 to provide the major uplift to the hosts.
Lungi Ngidi led the South African charge with a flurry of scalps that saw him bagging an all-important fifer despite being whacked around pretty mercilessly. Dawid Malan provided the early rampage with a 23-ball-43, setting the tone perfectly for the hosts.
Despite a resolute knock from Reeza Hendricks, the remaining South African batters found it tough to get going as they were reduced to 86 for 4. A seasoned South African captain, David Miller chose to hang in the middle while Tristan Stubbs fought back.
It was sheer delight to witness this kid take the battle to the very heart of the English hosts as they failed to secure even a single moment of reprieve. Combining with Andile Phehlukwayo, Stubbs made it a point to drag the South African attack as long as they could but the duo would eventually fall short in the end.
This is what Twitter had to say about Tristan Stubbs
Smashing a 28-ball-72, Stubbs would steal the limelight with an impeccable innings that featured 2 fours and 8 sixes at a staggering strike rate of 257.14. He would eventually be dismissed by Richard Gleeson as Jason Roy would pouch the all-important take to snuff out the South African resistance.
Twitter was absolutely overjoyed at the kind of excellent cricket that was stitched together by this youngster in the face of tremendous pressure. A string of exotic boundaries reigned supreme while South Africa started dreaming again.
