“Top 3 will be given a lot of role clarity in T20 cricket,” Rahul Dravid hints India’s top 3 might not change for T20 World Cup

Two of India's top 3 batsmen have been rested for the T20I series against South Africa

The head coach of the Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid, has said that India’s top 3 will be given a lot of “role clarity” in T20 cricket and they are perfectly capable of performing any sort of role that’s assigned to them according to where the game stands on a particular day.

India’s top 3 has been under the scanner since the last T20 World Cup because of their strike rates, with many people believing that India lacks explosive batsmen at the top of the order who can just tee off in the powerplay. As compared to the other teams, India has a very conventional top 3 who take their own time before getting into their groove and playing their shots.

Rahul Dravid was addressing the press conference yesterday ahead of the T20I series against South Africa for which two of India’s top 3, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have been rested.

Our top 3 are all quality players: Rahul Dravid

Dravid, when asked about the top 3, hinted that the team management doesn’t intend to make any changes in the top 3 at the moment because all three of them are quality players. It’s just that their roles will be clearly defined.

India has had Shreyas Iyer batting at no. 3 in the T20 internationals in the absence of Virat Kohli in recent times and he scored three back-to-back half-centuries against Sri Lanka.

Iyer is expected to bat at no. 3 in the series against South Africa as well and if he scores run consistently again, it will create a slightly tricky situation for the team management as they will have to find a place for Iyer in the playing XI when the first choice team is available.

Rahul Dravid, however, dropped clear hints yesterday that Virat Kohli will be back for “big tournaments” and Iyer, at the moment, can be considered only an understudy to Kohli for no. 3.
