The first T20I between India and New Zealand was a poor outing for the hosts as they performed ludicrously with both bat and ball. Opting to bowl first, they didn’t start well as New Zealand opener Fin Allen (35) took the hosts’ bowlers to the cleaners.
Devon Conway played the anchors’ role and smashed a decent fifty. But the real damage was done by Daryll Mitchell at the end who remained unbeaten on 58 runs and powered New Zealand to a total of 176 runs. For India Sundar was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with the figures 2/22.
Chasing the target, India never got going as they were reduced to 15/3 with Ishan Kishan (4), Rahul Tripathi (0) and Shubman Gill (7) back in the hut inside the first four overs. Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Hardik Pandya (21) then led the rescue charge but it wasn’t enough as they could take their side to 89 runs.
With India 89/5, while chasing 179 runs, it was only a matter of time till the tailenders give their wickets. Washington Sundar fought till the very end as he smashed a half-century in just 25 balls and tried his best. But this wasn’t enough as India fell short of runs and conceded a 1-0 lead in the series.
