Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has made a habit of scoring big in the knockout games. Not much time ago when he scored unbeaten 220 runs in the quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh and continued his fine form to smash 168 runs in the semi-final against Assam.
But when it mattered the most, he stood tall for his side and scored 108 runs in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 against Saurashtra. It was a one-man show as opposition bowlers were all over the Maharashtra batters. Not only the Jaydev Unadkat-led side took wickets but they also restricted the runs to leave the batting side tumbling at 105/3 in 31.2 overs.
Gaikwad negotiated the tricky phase as he respected good deliveries and slowly carved his way into the half-century in 96 balls. But once he got settled, he pressed the accelerator paddle and smashed his ton in 125 balls.
His hundred powered Maharashtra to a total of over 200 runs, which at one moment never looked possible. Gaikwad scored 7 fours and 4 sixes in his innings. Notably, the right-hander now has been in staggering form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This was his 8th ton in the last 10 innings, which also includes one double hundred as well. His consistent performance means continuously knocking on the doors of selectors and giving them a headache.
