“The Biggest Regret In My Captaincy Career”, Gautam Gambhir Looks Back At His Time At The Helm Of KKR

Gautam Gambhir had a phenomenal career as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. He won two trophies for the franchise as the skipper, and a few of his strategies are still being used by the team. Terming as the “biggest regret in my captaincy career”, Gambhir looked back at one of the not so memorable phases when he was at the helm of the franchise.

“The biggest regret of my captaincy career”

With MS Dhoni at the helm, Gautam Gambhir did not get many chances to captain India. In the few he got, he was at his best. However, many experts pointed out that Gambhir had terrific captaincy skills. All of it materialized when KKR sanctioned a project with the former India opener at the centre of it.

Apart from changing the structure of the squad from the root, Gambhir broke many records as a batsman and as a captain. His IPL captaincy records read 70 wins in 128 games. This is a terrific statistic in a competition heavy tournament like IPL. However, the current politician revealed that he has a regret about his captaincy tenure at KKR.

Talking on Star Sports, the former India cricketer said, “One of the biggest regrets in my captaincy career is not giving No.3 spot to SKY. KKR groomed him for 4 years and let go of him in 2018 & that was the biggest loss for KKR.”

Suryakumar Yadav is a top cricketer in India right now

Suryakumar Yadav played 54 matches for KKR and mostly operated in the lower middle-order. He was given the role of a finisher. Although he did well in patches, SKY could accumulate just 608 runs with KKR. He was then released to Mumbai Indians.

At MI, SKY has brought up over 1500 runs in around 55 games. However, in Mumbai, the player has batted mostly at No.3. He has also made his India debut and is one of the in-form limited-overs batsmen for India. Hence, Gambhir felt that he missed a trick by not giving a chance to SKY in the top-order.
