However, they could be in for a difficult moment because as per reports, MS Dhoni is likely to miss a few games due to injury. This would leave a massive hole in the squad, especially in the captaincy department. CSK’s next game is against Sunrisers Hyderabad. 1) Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane is in top form at the moment. Not many expected the Mumbai cricketer to turn up this way in IPL 2023. However, in CSK colours, he is rediscovering himself as a T20 batter.
Also, in the current squad, Rahane is the only player who has sufficient experience as an IPL skipper. Ravindra Jadeja has captained before but that tenure did not end well. With Rahane performing well and MSD anyways set for a return after a few games, it would be a wise option to appoint Rahane as the interim skipper of the squad.
2) Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the players who could captain CSK If MS Dhoni is not available due to an injury against SRH. Every day, it is becoming clearer that IPL 2023 could be MS Dhoni’s last season. Hence, CSK will have to plan for life after that and the first step will be to appoint a new captain.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is seen as the future of the franchise. The best bet for CSK will be to groom Rutu as the future captain of the squad. The 26-year-old has experience of leading a squad in domestic cricket. However, it is a different ball-game leading a big franchise like CSK. Hence, the franchise could take this opportunity to give Rutu the taste of captaincy at the highest level.
