During his superb innings on the opening day of the Kennington Oval Test match between the Indian cricket team and the England cricket team, Shardul overtook legendary English all-rounder Ian Botham on the list of fastest Test fifties on English soil. Speaking to the host broadcasters Sky Sports after his phenomenal performance, Thakur revealed that he was not aware of that record initially. But the Indian team has been teasing him as ‘Beefy’, the nickname of Ian Botham.

“I was not aware of it (Ian Botham’s record). But it’s always good to score important runs for the team. Yes, these guys are teasing me with his name. But I think it’s good to be compared with the greats of the game,” said Shardul Thakur after his half-century against England in the 4th Test.
