3 most shocking retentions by franchises ahead of IPL 2024 Auctions

IPL 2024 retentions were announced on Sunday. Most of the teams took some bold decisions to improve their squad for the next season. A few teams have a purse in excess of INR 30 Crores. At the same time, a few teams could have increased it. However, they retained some players who were not expected to be released. Here, we take a look at the list of the three most shocking retentions by franchises ahead of IPL 2024 Auctions.

1) Anuj Rawat – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Anuj Rawat, with a salary of more than INR 3 Cr, is still at RCB. This is despite the player not being at his best in the last two seasons. He has also not performed well in the domestic season.

It is possible that Dinesh Karthik might not have a long rope in IPL 2024. Anuj Rawat could replace him if DK does not do well in a few games. Being a left-hander, Anuj further has an advantage. However, with that much money, RCB could have hired him at a lower price or could have targeted someone else.

2) Matthew Short – Punjab Kings

Matthew Short is one of the most shocking retentions by franchises ahead of IPL 2024 Auctions. The Aussie cricketer was a replacement signing last season.

With Jonny Bairstow back in the side, Short could have been released. With money and an overseas lot available, the likes of Travis Head could have been targeted. However, it now appears that PBKS might not get a chance to improve their overseas quality for the next season.

 3) Matthew Wade – Gujarat Titans

The Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade has not played a lot of IPL cricket in recent times. The veteran is still a part of the side as the backup keeper.

GT could have targeted plenty of options such as Josh Inglis. However, they now have to stick with Wade, who can be inconsistent at times.
