5 Players Who Might Get More Chances In White-ball Cricket Under Rohit Sharma

The BCCI officially announced that the T20I captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, will lead the nation in the ODI format also going forward. Sharma has captained the Indian cricket team in ten ODI matches before, where the team has registered eight victories and two defeats.

Rohit will take over the reins of the team from Virat Kohli who had an excellent record in ODIs. However, according to reports, the BCCI wanted absolute clarity between the red-ball and white-ball leadership section. Thus, they have named Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain.

The upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against the South African cricket team is the first assignment for new ODI captain Rohit. The squad for the series is not revealed yet, but it is possible that the fans will see the following five players receive more chances in white-ball cricket under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

1. T Natarajan

Over the last few years, fans would have noticed that left-arm fast bowlers have always been present in the successful teams. Australia had Mitchell Starc in their T20 World Cup 2021 squad, New Zealand played with Trent Boult and Neil Wagner in the ICC World Test Championship. Even Pakistan who performed well in ICC T20 World Cup 2021 had Shaheen Shah Afridi.

India do not have a regular left-arm pacer in their squad. Since Rohit Sharma knows the importance of left-arm fast bowlers and the difference they can make, it should not be a surprise if T Natarajan gets more chances under him. After all, Rohit won IPL 2020 with left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult as the lead overseas pacer of the team.

2. Ravichandran Ashwin

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of the top performers in all formats of cricket. However, Ashwin failed to get a place in the white-ball teams between 2018 and 2021. He returned to the T20I squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 and performed well.

Since Ashwin has been performing well consistently, Rohit Sharma would love to use him more in the white-ball formats.

3. Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer has been playing domestic cricket for years, but he came into the limelight only during IPL 2021 while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Since Hardik Pandya has not been at his best for quite some time now, captain Rohit Sharma may look at Venkatesh Iyer as his number one pace-bowling all-rounder.

4. Yuzvendra Chahal

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal shockingly missed out on a place in the Indian T20 World Cup 2021 squad. The selectors preferred mystery spinner Varun CV and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar over him.

Chahal is a proven wicket-taking bowler. He has performed exceptionally well for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. He also owns the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in T20I wins. Chahal could be a game-changer in Rohit’s white-ball playing XIs.

5. Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav was once among India’s top spinners. However, for some unknown reasons, Yadav could not survive in the Indian team for long. He did not receive enough backing when his form dipped a bit.

Yadav could receive another life when Rohit Sharma takes over the reins of the ODI team. He is a wicket-taking bowler who has done well at the international level. Yadav only needs some more confidence which captain Rohit could provide to him. Thus, these five players could receive more chances to play white-ball cricket soon.
