Sri Lanka defeat Afghanistan in the first Super Four encounter
Batting first, Afghanistan actually did well in most parts of the match apart from the last few overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star for the Afghans as he scored 84 runs from 45 deliveries to help his side post a competitive total of 175. The 20-year-old struck four boundaries and six sixes in his knock. He was supported well by the likes of Ibrahim Zadran in Afghanistan’s first innings.
Sri Lanka had a fine start to the chase. The openers scored 62 runs in 6.3 overs before Kusal Mendis lost his wicket. For a chase of around 180, the performance in the powerplay was brilliant. In the middle overs, though, Sri Lanka started to struggle. They needed some big hits in the end to win the match. Dasun Shanaka failed and the team was under pressure. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 31 runs in 14 deliveries to take Sri Lanka over the line. It was a fine victory by the team and they will next take on India on Tuesday.
