With another 50-run opening partnership against New Zealand in the first match of the T20I series last night, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have now become India’s most successful batting pair ever in T20 international cricket.
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul now have a total of 12 partnerships of 50 runs or more between them, and they have gone past the partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan who added 50 runs or more a total of 11 times in T20I cricket.
Rohit Sharma is a part of the partnership which occupies the third position in this list as well. Him and the former Indian T20I captain Virat Kohli have added 50 or more runs 7 times so far in T20I cricket.
What’s noticeable is that all these partnerships are top-order partnerships. While Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan, all three of them are openers, Virat Kohli also generally likes to bat at no. 3, or sometimes he even opens the innings for India in T20I cricket.
And, It’s no surprise that these top-order players are involved in the maximum number of 50-run partnerships in this format of the game, simply because the top order batsmen get the maximum number of balls to face in this format, while the middle order players don’t get that many.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul can stretch their record further as they are supposed to continue opening for a long time
Rohit and Rahul can stretch their tally of fifty run partnerships quite a bit further as they are supposed to continue being the opening pair of India at least till the next T20 World Cup and India are expected to play more than 20 T20 international games between now and the next T20 World Cup in Australia.
After the current series against New Zealand, India will travel to South Africa where they will have another T20I series, and then they will have a full-fledged season back home in India next year.
