“Phenomenal achievement,” twitter hails Shreyas Iyer as he scores a hundred on test debut

Shreyas Iyer got the opportunity to play in Kanpur test match against New Zealand because of KL Rahul's injury

Shreyas Iyer has gone through a lot of agonies this year. Suffering a major shoulder injury in the T20I series against England, having to undergo surgery, missing the first leg of IPL and losing his place in India’s T20 World Cup squad, he has been through a fair bit of slide, but finally, the upward curve seems to have begun for a very talented Mumbai batsman as he scored a hundred in his debut test match today against New Zealand in Kanpur.

Shreyas Iyer was not in line to play this test match initially as the Indian team management was thinking about using Shubman Gill in the middle order, with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal opening the batting, but because of the muscle injury of Rahul, Gill had to open the batting with Agarwal and Shreyas was given the opportunity at the vacant middle-order spot, which he grabbed with both hands.

India were not really in a great position when Shreyas Iyer walked in to bat yesterday, but first with a brief partnership with the captain Ajinkya Rahane and then with a 100-run partnership with the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas got India back on track.

Shreyas Iyer hit a flurry of boundaries in the morning session of day 2

Unbeaten on his overnight score of 75, Shreyas came out all guns blazing in the morning session today and although the ball was swinging a little bit, he didn’t back down from his aggressive approach as a flurry of boundaries saw him get to his hundred very, very quickly, even though a couple of wickets fell at the other end.

Twitter was full of admiration for this knock, not just because Shreyas bailed India out of trouble and put them in a decent position in the test match, but also because of the way he turned it around for himself, from getting severely inured to making such a grand comeback and scoring a hundred on test debut.

Here is how Twitter reacted when Shreyas Iyer completed his hundred today –

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
