Australian women’s cricket team captain Meg Lanning goes on a sabbatical, no fixed date set for a comeback

Australia will have to find a new captain and a new no. 3 batter to replace an incredibly successful Lanning

The legendary captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, Meg Lanning, has decided to go on a sabbatical after winning everything in the game. The official Twitter handle of Cricket Australia (CA) revealed the news earlier today which took the Australian fans by a bit of a surprise.

Meg Lanning is believed to be willing to devote some time to her personal life after having a very fruitful professional career in the last few years. The Australian women’s team, at this point in time, are the world champions in both the ODI and T20I format of the game and apart from that, they recently also won the gold medal in the Commonwealth games.

All these global achievements of the Australian women’s team have come under the leadership of Lanning, who has not only led the team fantastically well tactically but has also been Australia’s chief contributor with the bat, batting at a vital position of no. 3.

Meg Lanning won’t play in The Hundred and the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) either

Meg Lanning, apart from being unavailable for the Australian national team, will also be unavailable for her franchises in The Hundred and the WBBL which are Trent Rockets and Melbourne Stars respectively. Lanning has actually been the captain of Melbourne Stars as well.

The statement released by Cricket Australia made it clear that Lanning has been granted permission by the board to take as much time off as she wants and at this point of time, no fixed date has been determined for his comeback, as CA is in full support of her going on a sabbatical to focus on her own self.

Australia will need to appoint a new captain for both ODI and T20I cricket in Lanning’s absence and will also have to find a batter who can put on performances as consistently as Lanning while batting at no. 3.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
