5 Players Who Have Played Most IPL Matches Without Winning The Trophy

Winning an IPL trophy depends on a variety of factors. Individual brilliance is one of the least impacting constituents. Although we have six different franchises who have won the competition, a few players have still not managed to wear the winner’s medal. This is despite them playing plenty of encounters in the competition. In this article, we take a look at five players who have played the most IPL matches without winning the trophy.

5) Chris Gayle (Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings) – 142

Chris Gayle has won the Orange Cap on two occasions and has won multiple games single-handedly. In fact, Gayle’s hitting form helped IPL carve out a brand and improve its popularity in the initial seasons. However, the West Indian has not won the trophy.

While he has played mostly at RCB, Gayle has also featured for KKR and Punjab Kings. Whenever he has been part of the team, the playing XI has had a weakness in some other area. This has not allowed Gayle to be part of an IPL winning team. That said, when he did get a chance to be part of two IPL finals for RCB, Gayle disappointed the fans with his show in the summit encounter. With him turning over 40, the elusive IPL trophy could be left unconquered in his career.

4) Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants and Delhi Capitals) – 151

One of the highest scorers in the competition, Ajinkya Rahane is yet to win the IPL. He has come close on a couple of occasions, having been part of the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Delhi Capitals squad that reached the finals in IPL 2017 and IPL 2020 respectively. Incidentally, it was Mumbai Indians who stopped both teams. Rahane was part of the MI unit in the initial seasons but did not win the championship.

When Rahane was part of RR, getting to the playoffs itself was difficult. Thanks to an inspired performance by RPS, he got a chance to play a final in 2017. However, Rahane’s best opportunity was in 2020, but the party was spoiled by the five-time champions.

3) Amit Mishra (Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 154

Amit Mishra is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL. He has played 154 games and has taken 166 wickets at an average of 23.97 and an economy of 7.35. Yet, the leggie has not won the trophy.

He has mostly been part of the Delhi unit that is yet to lift the championship. Mishra was a member of the Deccan Chargers and the SRH teams, but when both franchises won the trophy, the veteran was at Delhi.

2) AB de Villiers (Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 184

AB de Villiers stands at No.2 on this list of players who have played the most IPL matches without winning the trophy. For Delhi and Bangalore combined, ABD has played a total of 184 games.

Considered as probably the best overseas batsman in the history of the league, ABD’s chunk of IPL playing career has happened at RCB. The outfit is yet to win the trophy and hence, ABD’s hunt for an important trophy in his career continues.

1) Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 207

The highest run-getter in IPL history, Virat Kohli‘s search for an IPL trophy is yet to see an end. His team was eliminated in the playoff stage of IPL 2021 and this means that Virat needs to wait for another season to test his luck.

Although they have been inconsistent, RCB has done well to reach the finals on three occasions. However, at the summit clash, they have not done well and this has left them trophy-less so far.
