“The prince has arrived,” twitter reacts in joy as Shubman Gill completes his first ever international century in Harare

Shubman Gill also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record of the highest individual ODI score by an Indian batsman in Harare

Shubman Gill has been scoring runs consistently for India in ODI cricket since the time he made his comeback to the 50-over set up on the West Indies tour, but despite playing extremely well and looking in complete control for most parts of his innings, the classy top order right hander was somehow missing out on a hundred.

In the third ODI against West Indies, Gill was batting unbeaten on 98 when the rain halted the play and later the Indian innings got completed at that stage itself, leaving Gill two short of his first international hundred. And then in the first ODI against Zimbabwe, Gill was unbeaten again on 82, but India won the game as Zimbabwe had only set a target of 190.

But, Shubman Gill eventually reached the three figure mark earlier today in the third ODI against Zimbabwe, as he played a remarkable knock of 130 off just 97 deliveries on a surface where the ball was not just seaming around a little bit, but it was two paced as well.

Apart from Gill, every Indian batsman struggled to time the ball properly on that pitch, but Gill seemed to be batting on a different pitch altogether. He hardly took any risks or played any rash shots throughout his innings and still kept batting at a strike rate of more than a run a ball.

It remains to be seen if Shubman Gill retains his place in India’s ODI XI when top players come back

With his performances on the West Indies tour and now on Zimbabwe tour as well, Shubman Gill might have cemented his place in the Indian ODI squad, but it remains to be seen if he finds a place in the Indian playing XI when all the top Indian players return to the ODI squad.

The Indian fans on twitter, however, were very happy with the fact that Gill finally got to his first international hundred today. Here are some of the twitter reactions after Gill got to the three figure mark in Harare –

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
