“Ravi Shastri didn’t have the tendency to tolerate failures,” Dinesh Karthik reveals India’s ex coach wanted players to play in a certain way

India performed magnificently well in test cricket under Ravi Shastri, but couldn't win an ICC white ball tournament

The Indian wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, who is now playing in the Indian T20I team as a specialist finisher, has revealed that the former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri didn’t have a lot of “tolerance” for failure.

According to Dinesh Karthik, who was speaking on Cricbuzz, Shastri wanted the players to play in a certain way and if somebody went out there and tried to play differently than how Shastri wanted him to play, Shastri would not be too happy about it. Karthik, however, insisted that Shastri was a good coach overall.

Karthik played for India in all three formats in the era where Shastri was the head coach of the Indian team, but he didn’t get a long run in either of the three formats. The right hander was dropped after a couple of tough test matches in England where he couldn’t score a lot of runs in seaming conditions.

And then Karthik’s sacking in white ball cricket came as a result of India’s defeat in the World Cup 2019 semifinal against New Zealand. It was an ODI tournament and Karthik’s performances in T20I cricket were good enough for him to retain his place in T20I squad, but the veteran wicketkeeper was dropped from the ODIs and T20Is together.

Dinesh Karthik was recalled to the Indian T20I team after Rahul Dravid became head coach

However, when Rahul Dravid became India’s head coach after Ravi Shastri stepped down and at the same time, Karthik put on some heroic performances for RCB in the previous IPL, the 37-year old was recalled to the Indian T20I team and he has been given a long run ever since.

Dinesh Karthik has been given a tough role of batting at no. 6 and 7 since his comeback, but with the tough role, he has also been given a bit of security and he has not been dropped from the playing XI despite a few failures. Karthik has been picked in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup as well and he is also in contention for T20 World Cup.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
