A silver lining on a day1 for India, when archers and shooters faced heartbreaks

All of India danced and celebrated with joy today as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu gave India its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics, as she won a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category. Meanwhile, China’s Zhihu Hou took gold, she lifted 94kg to create an Olympic record while a new Olympic record was registered by Mirabai Chanu with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk. This is India’s second weightlifting medal at the Olympics overall. Team India will be looking to keep up this momentum going forward in the 16-day tournament.

The boys in blue make the country proud

Hockey

The day started with the Indian men’s hockey team claiming a victory against New Zealand as the boys in blue defeated them 3-2. Even though India had a bad start initially, the team collectively recovered and bounced back. The men’s hockey team will face Australia, ranked number one in the world, the match will take place at 15:00 IST (Indian Standard Time).

While the men’s hockey team got to a good start, the women couldn’t replicate the same on the opening day of the Olympics. The women were beaten comprehensively by the Netherlands as they put 5 past India, while the women in blue could only score one in their response.

Badminton

It was a brilliant display of strength and courage by the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as they defeated World No. 3 Chinese Taipei’s pair Lee yang and Chi-Lin. This ensured India’s first group stage win in men’s doubles. The Chinese Taipei duo had no answers to what was being thrown at them by the Indians.

Meanwhile, Sai Praneeth was defeated by Israel’s Misha Zilberman in an upsetting 21-17, 21-15 defeat.

Shooting

After finishing first in the qualifying rounds, Saurabh Chaudhary finished a disappointing 7th in the men’s 10m air pistol final. Even though he did not get his hands on the medal, at the age of just 19, Saurabh made the country proud at the biggest stage and will be looking to get a medal in the next Olympics.

All eyes now will be on the women’s 10m air pistol qualification and final on 25th July, Sunday as Manu Bhaker and Yashiswini Singh will carry the hopes of a billion people.

Boxing

Meanwhile, India’s boxing campaign began on a poor note as Vikas Krishan lost to Japan’s Okazawa in his Men’s Welterweight round of 32 clash. Next up in boxing from Team India is Mary Kom who will fight at 13:00 IST on the 25th July.

Table Tennis

In table tennis singles event, Manika Batra won her first-round match against Tin-Tin Ho of Great Britain in straight games. Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost to third seeds from Chinese Taipei, Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching, in the mixed doubles round. But alongside Manika Batra, Sutirtha Mukherjee, registered the first-round win as well.

Archery

And in Archery, India’s Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav lost to South Korea’s An San and Kim Je Deok in the quarterfinal. The pair managed to beat Chinese Taipei but couldn’t do the same against South Korea in the quarterfinals.

Tennis

Sumit Nagpal became the first Indian to win a tennis singles match since Leander Paes in 1996, as he defeated Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
