Most T20I matches played by a cricketer: Virat Kohli set to play his 100th match in T20Is

Apart from Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma is the only other Indian cricketer who has played 100 T20 internationals

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli will become the 14th player in the game to complete 100 T20 internationals tonight when he takes the field to play against Pakistan in India’s first group game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Apart from Virat Kohli, the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma is the only other Indian player who has played 100 T20 internationals.

Rohit actually has the most no. of T20 international caps by any player ever in the history of the game. He has played 132 T20Is so far and is a fair bit ahead of the second positioned Shoaib Malik who has got 124 T20 international caps to his name.

However, one unique record that Virat Kohli will achieve today is by completing 100 T20Is, he will become the first Indian player ever to play 100 matches in all three formats of the game. Rohit Sharma has played more than 100 games in T20Is and ODIs, but he is nowhere close to the tally of 100 test matches yet.

A few prominent white ball cricketers like Eoin Morgan, Shoaib Malik and Martin Guptill have also played more than 100 games in both formats of white ball cricket, but they are also lagging far behind in test cricket. Malik and Morgan, have, in fact, already announced their retirement from test and ODI cricket.

No other prominent cricketer apart from Virat Kohli might play 100 matches in all formats in future

As far as some other all format active cricketers are concerned, the likes of Ben Stokes have a very realistic chance of completing 100 games in tests and ODIs, but he has only played 34 T20 internationals so far and might not be able to get to the tally of 100 in T20I cricket.

Shakib Al Hasan is the one who might be in with a chance of completing 100 matches in all three formats, as he currently has 63 test matches and 99 T20Is to his name, apart from 221 ODIs that he has played. But, the only issue in case of Shakib is that Bangladesh doesn’t play test cricket as frequently as some of the other big countries.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
