Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals to lift their first IPL trophy. This happened in the first-ever season of the franchise and hence, it was a rare occasion. GT toppled many records in the recently concluded campaign and lead pacer Mohammed Shami was also part of one of them. Mohammed Shami achieves a unique record
Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was extremely important to Gujarat’s successful run in the competition. In 16 games, the speedster took 20 wickets at a decent economy of 8.00. Interestingly, in both the first and the last delivery that he bowled in IPL 2022, Shami ended up taking a wicket.
While Shami was special with the ball, he also had a batting record to his name. The player became the first cricketer to play all matches of an IPL season without coming to bat. Shami did not bat in all the 16 matches of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022.
Shami is actually not bad with the bat. He can strike a few big blows and in the Lord’s Test Match in 2021, his batting display helped India win the game. Although many said that GT would struggle with their batting, seeing Shami’s rare record, credit must be given to the management for pulling off such a feat.

The success of GT was in the fact that almost every player had a role to play in the campaign. Although there were a lot of good individual performances, it was the team effort that eventually took them home.
With the way that they have performed in IPL 2022, expectations would double for the franchise in the upcoming campaigns. It needs to be seen how they would tackle this challenge.
