“Might it be for the last time”, Simon Doull feels Kane Williamson must be replaced as the Test captain after the third game against England

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has been struggling due to form and fitness in recent months. Before the second Test against England, Kane returned with a COVID positive test and hence, had to miss the game. Tom Latham is captaining the squad in his absence. Now, former Kiwi cricketer and renowned commentator Simon Doull has felt that Kane should quit Test captaincy soon. He also proposed the name of the player to replace him. In this article, we take a look as Simon Doull opines that Kane Williamson must be replaced as the Test captain.

Kane Williamson must be replaced as the Test captain

While speaking to Sky Sports, Simon said, “If Kane Williamson is fit for the last Test match and captains New Zealand, might it be for the last time in Test cricket? I just think it’s almost time for Latham to take over this Test side.”

Talking about the reasoning behind the idea, Doull continued, “I just want Kane to be the best batter New Zealand has ever had. He will be, but he’s such a good quality player and it hurts me to see what he’s going through at the moment form-wise, coming out of the IPL and into that first Test. He is such a quality player and quality guy.”

Regarding Tom Latham, Doull opined, “He’s a terrific captain; I think he understands and reads the game really well, and he is comfortable within his own game at the top of the order.” While Doull said that Kane must relieve himself of Test captaincy, he conceded that he must continue with his role in the shorter formats.

The player has been struggling due to form in recent months

Kane Williamson has had it tough in the last few months. While the elbow injury is troubling him constantly, the runs have also not been flowing freely from his bat. In the last four games, Kane has recorded the highest score of just 52*. Considering the stature of the player, he needs to do better for himself and the team.
