CSK did not have a great outing last season. Since then, the team had not improved much, barring the signings of the likes of Ben Stokes. They also had a lot of injury issues at the start with the likes of Kyle Jamieson, Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh all struggling. There were a few availability problems, too. Despite this, the team managed to do well in the tournament and is currently in the Top 2.
Credit must go to the management and MS Dhoni for pulling this off. It also needs to be noted that while Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja were in poor form with the bat, Maheesh Theekshana has not done much with the ball. It was players like Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana who stepped up and made CSK a strong squad in IPL 2023. Of course, the opening pair has had significant contribution, with them stepping up almost every fixture. All these reasons, added with the captaincy of MS Dhoni, makes CSK a hot favourite to win this season and add fifth IPL trophy to the cabinet.
