“Hussey……Faf…..Conway”, Harsha Bhogle traces an interesting pattern of foreign CSK openers

Although he did not have a great start to IPL 2022, Devon Conway has kickstarted his campaign. He has got scores of 85(55)* and 56(37) to get himself back in form. Meanwhile, popular commentator Harsha Bhogle had an interesting topic to say about the Kiwi’s rise. In this article, we take a look at the interesting pattern traced out by Harsha Bhogle about foreign CSK openers.

Foreign CSK openers have always been orthodox and also destructive

When it comes to foreign openers, Chennai Super Kings have always had the luxury of enjoying having a great cricketer. In the initial seasons, it was the likes of Mathew Hayden who did well for the franchise. Later, players such as Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith also enjoyed a great time at the top of the order.

However, when it comes to consistency, CSK has been most benefited by Michael Hussey and Faf du Plessis. Interestingly, unlike the openers mentioned before, Hussey and Faf are cricketers who rely on orthodox shots to get their runs and not much on power. This combination has yielded good returns to CSK over the years.

Now, it seems that Devon Conway is also developing in the same mould. As seen in the last two encounters, the southpaw impressed many with his ability to get runs by playing traditional shots. There was not much slogging in his knocks. Harsha Bhogle also felt the same after witnessing Conway for two games. Here is what he said:

Devon Conway is a terrific investment by CSK

Hired at INR 1 Cr, Conway is a terrific buy by CSK. Apart from his ability to single-handedly win games, it needs to be noted that Conway is a multi-dimensional cricketer. He is an efficient wicket-keeper and this might be useful when MS Dhoni retires in the future. Conway can also bowl a bit of medium-pace although that has not been used much by his teams. All these factors make Conway a solid investment for CSK.
