5 Popular Batsmen who never scored a double century in Tests

Test cricket is a game of mental strength. Playing in the sun for a whole day, for 5 consecutive days, is taxing on a cricketer’s mind and body. As tiring as it is for the bowlers, it becomes mentally taxing for the batsmen as well. Over the years, the game has been blessed with tremendous batsmen, who have scored double and triple centuries in Tests. However, not everyone can manage to score a double century. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to get to the milestone of scoring a double century in Tests. Today we will take a look at 5 batsmen who never scored a double century in Tests.

#1. Mark Waugh (AUS)

Mark Waugh is one-half of one of the most influential cricketing brothers in the world. Waugh made an explosive debut, scoring a century in his very first match. But this was a bittersweet debit, as he was replacing his out of form elder brother Steve Waugh. In his Test career, Mark hit 47 half-centuries and 20 centuries. He also maintained an average of 41.81 in his career.

However, while a great batsman, Waugh could never convert any of those 20 centuries into a double century. His highest score was 153* against India in 1998.

#2. Michael Hussey (AUS)

Michael Hussey is one of Australia’s best batsmen of all time. Nicknamed as ‘Mr. Cricket’ for always playing in the spirit of the game, Hussey was also a phenomenal batsman. In his Test career, he hit 29 fifties and 19 centuries. However, he couldn’t score a double century in Tests throughout his career.

But he came pretty close to scoring one. Hussey got out for 195 against England, and for 182 against Bangladesh. An unfortunate situation, Hussey came just 5 runs close to getting a double hundred in Tests.

#3. Desmond Haynes (WI)

Desmond Haynes is a former West Indies cricketer and a right-hand batsman. He was known for his impeccable timing. Haynes is also one of the few to score a century on debut in ODIs. In his Test career, Haynes hit 18 centuries and 39 half-centuries. He also maintained a healthy average of 42.29.

#4. Mohammad Azharuddin (IND)

Mohammad Azharuddin is a former Indian cricketer and captain. He was known for his attacking style. In his Test career, he scored 6215 runs at a healthy average of 45.04. Azharuddin hit 21 fifties and 22 hundreds in Test cricket. However he failed to get a double century.

Azharuddin came very close to scoring the double ton though. He got out on 199, just one run short of the milestone against Sri Lanka. Azhar was trapped LBW by Ravi Ratnayeke, coming very close to the vaunted milestone. He scored 150+ runs 7 times in his career, but failed to convert them into the big one.

Vaughan came very close to getting a double ton in his Test career. He once got out for 197 against India in 2002, and for 195 in the very same series. Vaughan scored more than 150 runs 6 times in his Test career. But unfortunately, he couldn’t convert those phenomenal scores into a double ton.
