6 popular players who played in IPL 2008, but you might not remember

When IPL first came onto the scene, many veteran players took part in its inaugural edition. However now, 12 years down the line, not too many people remember that these veterans once played in the IPL.

Here are 6 popular players who played in IPL 2008, but you might not remember –

#1 Mark Boucher

The South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad in the first edition of the IPL.

Boucher was the second highest scorer for RCB in the tournament and that too when he didn’t even get the opportunity to play all the games.

Boucher played just 10 games for RCB in IPL 2008 and scored 225 runs at an average of 32.14.

#2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was never quite a swashbuckler in his entire career, but RCB still signed him for some reason in the first ever IPL auction.

RCB perhaps wanted Chanderpaul to give them a bit of stability in the middle order, but as it turned out, Chanderpaul was a big failure in the tournament.

The Caribbean left-hander played 3 games and scored a total of 25 runs with the highest score of 16.

#3 Stephen Fleming

Stephen Fleming is a well renowned name among the IPL fans, but people mostly admire him for his role as the coach of the Chennai Super Kings. However, very few people know that he actually played for CSK as well in the first season of the IPL.

Fleming scored close to 200 runs for CSK in the 10 games that he played.

#4 Makhaya Ntini

The former South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini also featured for CSK in IPL 2008 and although he was not in top 5 among the highest wicket-takers for CSK in the tournament, his economy rate was the best among all the fast bowlers that CSK had in IPL 2008.

Ntini went for less than 7 runs an over in the 9 games that he played and finished the tournament with 7 wickets.

#5 Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi has participated in almost all the prominent T20 leagues around the globe and that includes IPL as well. People might be surprised to know that Afridi featured for Deccan Chargers in IPL 2008. However he was inconsistent with the bat as usual, as he scored just 81 runs in 10 games at an average of 10.13.

Afridi did decently with the ball though as he got 9 wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 7.50.

#6 Chaminda Vaas

Chaminda Vaas was another player in the category of legends who took part in IPL 2008, but he, surprisingly, didn’t get the opportunity to play too many games for his team Deccan Chargers. The Chargers, who were captained by VVS Laxman, played Vaas in just 5 games.

Vaas got 5 wickets in the 5 games he played, however he was a tad expensive as his economy rate was close to 9.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
