“Having a great captain is like playing with 12 players,” Rob Key backs Eoin Morgan to continue as England’s white ball captain

Rob Key has recently been appointed the new managing director of England Cricket Board (ECB)

Rob Key, the new managing director of England Cricket Board (ECB), has dropped clear hints that Eoin Morgan will continue as England’s white ball captain and there is going to be no change in England’s white ball leadership as it has been in England’s red ball leadership.

Rob Key, as soon as he took up the job of ECB MD, had a massive decision to make because Joe Root stepped down as England’s test captain after back to back losses in Ashes and in the away test series against West Indies. Key gave the test captaincy to Ben Stokes, but he is in no mood to make any changes in white ball at the moment.

While England’s white ball team has been performing dominantly, both in bilaterals and in world events, under the leadership of Eoin Morgan, it’s Morgan’s personal form with the bat which has been a cause of concern in the last one year or so.

Great captains impact the game with their decision making: Rob Key

But, according to Rob Key, who was in an exclusive conversation with Sky Sports, Eoin Morgan might have struggled with the bat of late, but his captaincy has been brilliant and if a team has a great captain, it’s almost like that team has an extra player because a captain makes so much difference with his decision making.

Great captains make great decisions on the ground and it’s their decision making itself which is good enough to justify their place in the side, which is the case with Eoin Morgan because he is a great captain and even if he is not scoring runs right now, he is justifying his place with his captaincy.

After Rob Key’s statement, it can be safely assumed that England will play at least the next two ICC white ball events, that is the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year and ODI World Cup in India next year, under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
