Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan get promotion at Mumbai Indians, become Global head of performance and Global head of cricket development respectively

Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan were earlier the head coach and director of cricket at Mumbai Indians in the IPL

The 5-time champions of the IPL, Mumbai Indians, have given promotion to their head coach Mahela Jayawardene and director of cricket Zaheer Khan and these two former cricketers are now named as the new global head of performance and global head of cricket development of the franchise respectively.

The new job profile of Mahela Jayawardene makes him the boss of all the coaches that MI will appoint for their original and sister franchises worldwide. MI currently has a franchise in South Africa which is named MI Capetown and a franchise in UAE which is named MI Emirates, apart from their original franchise in the IPL which is Mumbai Indians.

MI is reportedly planning to name Mark Boucher as the head coach of MI Capetown, as Boucher has recently announced that he will step down as the head coach of South Africa’s national cricket team after this year’s T20 World Cup.

MI will then appoint new head coaches for MI Emirates and Mumbai Indians in the IPL as well and all the coaches will have to report to Mahela Jayawardene, who will be in charge of making decisions on the overall performance of MI franchises in the leagues worldwide.

Zaheer Khan will be in charge of all signings at Mumbai Indians and sister franchises

As far as Zaheer’s new role is concerned, he will be in charge of the signings of all the players in the leagues worldwide, for the franchises owned by MI. MI has got a big team of scouts all around the world and the scouts will now directly have to report to Zaheer who will make a final call on the signings of the players.

It will be interesting to see who becomes the new head coach of Mumbai Indians now that Mahela Jayawardene has been given a promotion and he will no longer be the head coach of the team in the IPL. The appointment of another high profile name as the head coach of Mumbai Indians in the IPL can’t be ruled out.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
