The third edition of the Lanka Premier League started on December 6th. Although it was supposed to be held a few months ago, due to the economic situation in the nation, the tournament was postponed. Interestingly, a few recently retained IPL players are also a part of the event. Here, we take a look at the list of retained IPL players who are playing in the Lanka Premier League 2022.
List of IPL players in the Lanka Premier League 2022
After the golden generation of Sri Lanka ended, the country found it hard to become a feeder to IPL franchises. At times, barring Lasith Malinga, no other franchise had a Sri Lankan player on their roster. However, that is changing now. Thanks to the impressive performances of the Sri Lankan squad, more players are now getting a chance in the tournament.
IPL teams recently announced the list of players whom they have retained for the next season. A few players from this list are also participating in LPL 2022. While four players from this list are from Sri Lanka, the remaining two are from Afghanistan.
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Kolkata Knight Riders) – Jaffna Kings
- Maheesh Theekshana (Chennai Super Kings) – Jaffna Kings
- Bhanuka Rajapaksa (Punjab Kings) – Dambulla Giants
- Noor Ahmad (Gujarat Titans) – Dambulla Giants
- Wanindu Hasaranga (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – Kandy Falcons
- Matheesha Pathirana (Chennai Super Kings) – Kandy Falcons
An important tournament for Sri Lanka
— LPL – Lanka Premier League (@LPLT20) December 6, 2022
Sri Lanka surprised all by winning Asia Cup 2022. They actually did decently well in T20 World Cup 2022 despite the conditions not suiting them. With the young squad gaining experience, the team will become stronger in the next few years.
LPL produced some fine performers for the Sri Lankan Team. The nation needs more talent and hence, the tournament will be important for them. Even from a commercial point of view, the competition must be a success for the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.
